Tom Benton Feature
Recently, 20 year old Tom Benton joined Instagram live to chat about his cycling career to date.
At the age of 7, Benton started racing at the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club.
“I jumped on a bike down there on the velodrome and fell in love with the sport,” Benton said.
In 2018 Benton joined the orange development squad, which got him into contact with InForm TM Insight MAKE. He then signed with the team for the 2019 season.
Since joining the team, Benton has won the 2019 Melbourne to Warrnambool under 21 category and finished 9th at the 2020 Australian under 23 Time Trial Championships.
But the biggest highlight in his cycling career to date was racing at Race Torquay during the week of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
“Race Torquay was something I’ve never been able to do before, which is race against world tour guys. It wasn’t a world tour race but it was a field full of world tour riders. It was a pretty cool experience, one I won’t forget,” Benton said.
Earlier in the year, Benton participated at the Australian under 23 Road Race Championships. In a brilliant display of teamwork, Benton waited in the breakaway for teammate Rudy Porter to come across after crashing earlier in the race.
“I’m happy to help out the boys. I don’t put myself into a position to win a lot of races just because I’m not often the sprinter or climber,” Benton said.
Benton is hoping for a good result at the Australian Road Race Championships next year.
“It will be my last year in the under 23 category. I think a lot of people go into their last year thinking this is it and that’s my take as well. I’ll have one last crack at it and we will take it from there,” Benton said.
Everyone at InForm TM Insight MAKE is excited to see where the future takes Tom when cycling resumes from the COVID-19 suspension.
