Rudy Porter Feature
By Jacob Bevis
Last Thursday May 7th, I caught up with Rudy Porter on Instagram live to chat about his cycling career to date.
At the age of 14, Porter started racing at local criteriums. His interest in the sport came from his father and cousin. “My cousin Alex went to junior worlds on the track, so I had a bit of inspiration from him as well,” Porter said.
In 2018 Porter joined InForm TM Insight MAKE from the Compañeros development team after finishing 4th at the Under 19 National Road Championships.
Since joining the team, Porter has finished 6th at the Under 23 National Road Championships and 9th on General Classification in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.
But his biggest highlight to date was participating in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race earlier this year. “Riding with pros and seeing the crowds, it was just incredible never seen anything like that. Sun Tour is a close second but you can’t beat a world tour race.”
Prior to the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, Porter made it back to the break and finished 6th at the Under 23 National Road Championships after crashing and twisting his handlebars. “I thought maybe this is it but I had done so much training for it so I couldn’t let this go. I got back on my bike and made my way back to the peloton.”
Porter is hoping to race world tour in the future. “I want to race world tour, that’s my goal at the moment. Have to win at NRS level first and then keep continuing.”
Everyone at InForm TM Insight MAKE is excited to see where Rudy takes his cycling career once cycling resumes from the COVID-19 suspension.
