2020 Vision: InForm TM Insight MAKE Collects Six Medals at the Fed Uni Road Nats
In what is set to be another promising year for InForm TM Insight MAKE, the 2020 edition of the highly anticipated Road Nationals saw the young team walk away with six medals - two golds, three silvers and a bronze - across six U19 and U23 events.
After the performance the team put on just the year before - 2019 saw InForm collect four medals - DS Pat Lane says he is continually impressed by how the young, dedicated teammates continue to raise the bar.
“I could not be prouder of the way the boys rode this week,” Lane says.
“From Luke Plapp and Pat Eddy’s golds, Conor Leahy, Pat Eddy, and new signing Blake Agnoletto’s silvers, and Carter Turnbull’s bronze, to Rudy Porter fighting his way back to the breakaway group battered and bruised with the help of Tom Benton, the skill, hunger, and teamwork displayed was outstanding.”
Here, race by race, we share InForm TM Insight MAKE’s incredible week in Ballarat.
Wednesday 8 January Time Trials
U19 TT – 18.93km
Pat Eddy became the under 19 individual time trial national champion for the second time with a time of 24:28.29, beating second placed Alastair Mackellar by 58.5. His team mate Blake Agnoletto - in his first event for InForm TM Insight MAKE - finished 6th with a time of 26.11.16.
“I am stoked to go back-to-back. I put a lot of preparation into this and I put a lot of pressure on myself, so to win it again feels awesome.”
U23 TT – 28.64km
After finishing 2nd in the same event last year, Lucas Plapp became the under 23 individual time trial national champion with a time of 37:43.77, beating Kelland O’Brien by 14.6 secs. Carter Turnbull also road the TT brilliantly, finishing 3rd with a time of 38:37.76. With all four InForm TM Insight MAKE riders impressively finishing in the top 10, it was Rudy Porter in 8th and Tom Benton in 9th.
“I set myself the task to go one better than the silver last year, and it feels really good to have done that. It was a great week of racing for our entire team, and the hard work is really paying off.”
Friday 10 January Criteriums
U19 CRIT – 20 laps
Blake Agnoletto finished 2nd after fighting it out to the line with Declan Trezise, who came out on top. In an impressive and aggressive race, Agnoletto and Eddy were both in the break with eight laps to go and stayed there until the finish, with Eddy crossing the line for 4th.
U23 CRIT – (30 laps, 3:55pm)
In a tight race to the line against Kelland O’Brien, Conor Leahy had an impressive ride to finish in 2nd, with Godfrey Slattery also finishing in the top 10, crossing the line for 6th.
Saturday 11 January Road Races
U19 Road Race – 104.4km (9 x 11.6km laps)
Patrick Eddy finished 2nd behind Declan Trezise after a sprint to the finish. While Agnoletto had a good race, the new addition suffered a mechanical in the final lap.
U23 ROAD RACE – 139.2km (12 x 11.6km laps)
Again proving his strength and hunger, Rudy Porter finished 6th after crashing and twisting his handle bars early in the race. A breakaway of eight riders established early, which included Tom Benton who stayed in the breakaway for most of the day, while Porter made his way back to the peloton. In a brilliant display of teamwork, Benton waited in the breakaway for Porter to come across with just two laps remaining, but it was InForm alumni Jarrad Drizners who won the race, with Lucas Plapp 5th, Rudy Porter 6th, Carter Turnbull 7th, David Williams 12th, Tom Benton 17th.
Sunday 12 Jan Road Race
ELITE ROAD RACE – 185.6 km (16 x 11.6km laps)
In a race filled with world class riders, Mark O’Brien rode an aggressive race all day, finishing in 14th.
