The final stage of the Tour of the King Valley kicked off with a 91.4-kilometre road race with two sprint and three KOM bonuses up for grabs.

Other than some action from the short yet precarious dirt section that kept support crews busy, high speeds kept the peloton together for the first 60-kilometres.

After the second KOM, it was Liam Magennis, Timothy Roe, Ryan Thomas and Jesse Coyle that slipped away. With the peloton slow to react, the breakaway of four were quick to increase their gap to over a minute. It was an aggressive effort that looked like it might stick, but as the peloton picked up the pace over the last KOM, the group caught up with just two kilometres remaining.

A competitive sprint to the finish line saw Raphael Freienstein finish in 5th and Carter Turnbull in 10th, with stage winner Tristan Ward, Nicholas White and Jarrad Drizners finishing off the podium.

InForm MAKE retains its position in second in the team classification, with Carter Turnbull finishing in sixth in the general classification.

Next up is Amy’s Otway Tour in Lorne in two weeks' time; a challenging two-day event along the winding and scenic Great Ocean Road.

QUOTES

Pat Lane, DS

“Amy’s Otway Tour always attracts a big crowd and is an exciting race for our boys to be part of. With Carter and Raph showing great form, we’ll be hoping to finish right up in the pointy end of the general classification.”
